What is the Hospitality Industry ?

                 The hospitality industry is part of a larger enterprise known as travel and tourism. Travel and tourism is a large group of businesses with one common goal of providing necessary or desired services to travelers. Advances in transportation allowed more people to travel greater distances at lower costs, expanding tourism worldwide. From humble beginnings, hospitality and tourism have grown into two of the world's largest industries.
Hospitality refers to a relationship between a guest and a host where the host receives the guest with goodwill, including receiving and entertaining guests, visitors or strangers. The Latin word "hospital" means guest room, lodging for guests, inn.

Hospitality means welcoming a traveler or offering a home away from home and the word is derived from the Latin word "hospes" meaning visitor or stranger. The hospitality and tourism industry is a broad industry that includes all economic activities that directly or indirectly contribute to or depend on travel and tourism.

While the definitive time of Indian hospitality cannot be certain, the country's early hotels were mostly established and run by colonial rulers. Where inns and taverns were famous stays for travelers and merchants, luxury hotels were created. Hotels like Albion Hotel, Mac Farlanes Hotel and Victory Hotel were famous in Indian hospitality during the colonial era in the 18th century.

However, the real development of hotels began in Calcutta during the 19th century. While Mumbai remained the commercial capital of the hotel industry, Delhi witnessed a boom from the late 19th century onwards.

It was not until the early 20th century that visionaries of indigenous origin started investing in the hotel business, with Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata as the pioneer. He incorporated Taj Hotels and left indelible marks for other budding hoteliers like Mohan Singh Oberoi who founded Oberoi Group of Hotels, Babu Brijpal Das and Shri L.P Gupta, founder of Clarks Groups of Hotels and Surendra Paul, founder of Park Hotels. After independence, these industry pioneers took over several British properties, maintaining their standards of service and quality.

Although concentrated in a few metro cities, the Indian hotel industry has had a highly organized luxury segment over the years. According to reports, in 2018 alone, the total number of rooms in the top 11 cities was estimated at approximately 92,537. As the number of domestic and international travelers increases, so does the year-on-year average occupancy.

Then came the COVID pandemic, which had an unprecedented impact on the sector, causing a total revenue loss of around INR 90,000 crore. Experts believe that occupancy and average daily rate will not reach pre-COVID levels until 2022 and 2023, when the vaccine will hopefully be available in full swing.

While losses were severe during the extended lockdown period, the hospitality sector is slowly witnessing an uneven recovery, with domestic travelers as the main driver. Additionally, as uncertainties persist in international travel, many hotel chains are trying to bring the luxury overseas hotel experience to the country. In addition, the trend of offering stays and work from a hotel is also on the rise and this is something that hotels can take advantage of.
