Hotel Management - Career, Scope and Opportunities
Hospitality is one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. According to Ernst & Young's report, Global Hospitality Industry Insights 2016, hospitality will be the largest employer in the world, contributing 1 in 11 jobs created. The World Travel & Tourism Council calculated that tourism generated $8.31 trillion ($120 billion) or 6.3 percent of the nation's GDP in 2015 and supported 37.315 million jobs, 8.7 percent of its total employment. The sector is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 7.5 percent to $18.36 trillion ($270 billion) by 2025 (7.2 percent of GDP). This makes India one of the fastest growing tourism sectors in the next decade.
With the Ministry of Tourism (MoT), Government of India targeting a growth rate of over 12 percent in both inbound and domestic tourists, the tourism sector is projected to generate additional employment for around 2.5 million people, both directly and indirectly during the period 2010-16 (12th Plan). And this number will increase with the addition of new hotels and resorts every year as a result of India making a big name for itself on the tourism map. It is no wonder, then, that enterprising youngsters have been lining up for courses related to hospitality and hotel management in institutes across the country. And the need for a world-class institute in India has never been stronger. Professional hospitality institutes churn out highly qualified professionals every year. Of course, trained professionals have an advantage over untrained graduates, as hotels prefer not to invest in training new recruits.
The hospitality arena in India is not only growing rapidly but has evolved into a multi-faceted industry. There has been rapid growth in the development of the Indian aviation sector. Indians are traveling more than in the past due to better connectivity and ease of flying. There has also been an increase in foreign tourists. Thanks to advances in technology, hotel rooms can now be booked at the click of a button. From budget hotels to five-star properties and homestays to boutique resorts, there's something for every traveler. Awareness of international hospitality standards is growing and people are demanding high quality service in hotels and restaurants. Social and digital media also provide them with a platform to rate offers and express their dissatisfaction. Several international brands and chains have entered the local market. And given the high level of competition, customers have plenty to choose from.
In terms of human resources, this industry experiences a high turnover of qualified people. In addition, trained hospitality professionals are absorbed by many multinational companies including banks and IT firms.
Position for recreation
In addition to the positions listed above, people with a hotel management degree can apply for a variety of informal and formal positions outside of the hotel industry.
